Chad/Tchad

From 1971 to 1979, SCF's CEO, John Newby, worked in Chad as a wildlife biologist, most of this
time in the vast Ouadi Rimé-Ouadi Achim Game Reserve. The reserve harboured some of the
last large remaining populations of scimitar-horned oryx and dama gazelle in the wild. Although
much of Newby's data was lost during the civil unrest that plagued the country at the time,
his observations provide a unique insight into the biology and ecology of the region, as well as
the former abundance of the reserve's wildlife. Newby's Journal for the years 1975 to 1977
