Our logo - the Scimitar-horned Oryx

Our logo features the Scimitar-horned Oryx, an antelope emblematic of the environmental
crisis facing Saharan wildlife. Once abundant across the Sahel, the oryx is now extinct in the
wild. The photo below is the last known picture of oryx in the wild; it was taken in the Aïr
Mountains of Niger in 1980. To learn more about the oryx, visit the SCF Species Profile.
Hope for the recovery of this and other desert species is reflected in efforts today to restore
the oryx as a vibrant symbol of the Sahara’s natural heritage. To find out more about how
SCF and its partners are working to return the oryx to the wild in Tunisia, click here. SCF
and its partners in North Africa, Europe, the Middle East and the United States are pooling
their efforts to ensure that the best available stock is bred in captivity for release back into
the wild.
