SCF Species Profiles

There are relatively few sources of good information on the larger species that inhabit the
Sahara and bordering Sahel. The best ones include the Action Plans of the IUCN/SSC Specialist
Groups, ARKive, the 2006 IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, and the soon-to-be-published
volumes on the Mammals of Africa. Especially recommended is the latest edition of the
excellent CMS publication "Sahelo-Saharan Antelopes: Status and Perspectives." produced by
the Royal Institute of Natural Sciences in Belgium. A list of these and many other sources of information can be found on the SCF Resources pages.

It is not our goal to duplicate this material but to provide an up-to-date source of information
on the status of the species concerned and the measures being taken to conserve them.
Through its work, SCF, SSIG and their partners have been instrumental in providing unique and
valuable data on desert wildlife. Much of this can be found in the technical reports available on
our SCF Resources page.

By insuring that up to date information is available, SCF hopes that greater attention will be
paid to desert wildlife and its conservation needs. We also hope that these pages will be
instrumental in raising awareness of the uniqueness and diversity of Saharan fauna and flora.
